DIFFICULTY: Easy Looking for new links to click? Here are two! Freerice.com is a great site that essentially teaches you vocabulary while you're helping end poverty! You can choose from english vocab, to spanish vocab, to different types of math questions, geography questions, or even questions about famous pieces of art! For every question you get right, advertisers donate 10 grains of rice! It's also nice because if you have cookies enabled on your computer, it'll save how many grains of rice you've earned! Freeflour.com is pretty similar to Freerice, but it's questions about capitals and countries! This one is great too. It shows you how many spoons of flour you've donated, how many buns it equates to and then, if you answer enough questions correctly, how many loaves you've donated! Try them out! :) Also, did you get a chance to walk around barefoot today? I did, ouch! I'm definitely going to appreciate my shoes more from now on...

Wow, I can't believe we're almost to 100 days! 2010 is going by so fast! Anyway, today's challenge involves a really awesome organization called Mercy Corps. Mainly, the issues Mercy Corps deals with have to do with poverty, but they do so much! They fight for education, for education, against war, for stable government, for the environment, against displacement, for emergency aid, for technology and clean water and even more! So how can you help? Well, they have these really cool things called Mercy Kits. Mercy Kits support health, economic livelihood, education, etc. in developing nations. Each kit has a really great description about exactly what the donation goes towards, and what's really cool about them is that they are pretty much meant to be given as gifts! Some of them are really expensive, but others are relatively inexpensive for the amount of good that they do! I love how many options there are for kits, because you can get one pertaining to an issue that whoever you're giving it to really cares about. (Also, don't forget not to wear shoes tomorrow! ;) ) DIFFICULTY: Medium One thing I totally take for granted every day: shoes. Honestly, I don't really think about my shoes when I put them on. I don't think about how useful they are, how much I really need them, or how difficult life would be if I didn't have them. However, the reality is that millions of people, especially kids, go barefoot every day. This is bad for three reasons: 1. Walking barefoot can cause diseases that permanently damage the feet. 2. Walking barefoot can cause cuts and sores that can become infected. 3. Some schools require children to wear shoes as a part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they can't receive an education. So you may be wondering...how can we help? Well, Tom's Shoes is a well known group that donates one pair of shoes for every pair someone buys. That adds up to a lot of shoes! However, buying shoes is just half the battle. It's also important, especially if you can't afford to buy another pair of shoes right now, to get the word out. On April 8th, Tom's Shoes is asking everyone to go barefoot for one day, one hour, or even just a few minutes! Go for a walk barefoot, try to do some daily chores barefoot, and if anyone asks you why you aren't wearing any shoes, tell them about how much we take shoes for granted, every day! You can pledge to go barefoot here, and below is a video that explains the cause a little better! DIFFICULTY: Easy
So I know it's not Christmas time, but it's good to start thinking about what kind of giving you want to do throughout the holiday season. Samaritan's Purse has this program called Operation Christmas Child, where people can donate shoeboxes filled with small, inexpensive gifts to be distributed around the world to families whose parents can't afford to celebrate Christmas. They have really great, helpful guidelines here! Another great thing about this is it can be an art project. You get to decorate the shoe box with different things. It's good to know about this now because you can be on the look out for goodies to fill the boxes with! DIFFICULTY: Easy
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! The weather has been so nice out here :) Anyways, here's a really easy challenge. Watch Extreme Makeover Home Edition. If you've never heard about it, it's a great show. It takes poor families who have helped out their community in some way and totally remakes their houses. The end result is spectacular, and the show does a great job of getting community members involved. Usually, by the end of it, some local company or school has agreed to pay of their mortgage or help the kids pay for school. So why does watching the show help? Well. By watching the show you're ensuring that it continues to run and help people. Also, the show is inspiring, and by the end of it I'm always in the mood to go do something to better my community! The show has a website, where you kind find many resources about how to volunteer and where. So get watching, get inspired, and make a difference! :) DIFFICULTY: Easy All over the world, there are individuals trying to change their communities, and the lives of others through their own efforts. Today's challenge is to support the efforts of someone who is trying to save the world on their own! An example of one such person is a guy named Shawn, who started the Uncultured Project: What's great about this challenge is that there are a MILLION ways to help! Of course, you can always donate money, but what individual's trying to make a difference need just as much as money is people to spread the word. The more people who know about these projects as well as the more organizations that know about them, the more that can be done to solve whatever problem the project is trying to combat.
Besides, I think we can all take a message out of the Uncultured Project. Shawn, pretty simply, woke up one day, took what little money he had and decided to make a difference with it. And what's amazing is that he HAS made a difference with it! If all of us supported, or became, people like him, there'd be far fewer problems that needed to be solved! (8 more tabs to the count) DIFFICULTY: Easy Here's a pretty common and easy one to start off the month. Today's challenge is to donate any old clothing (still in good condition!) to nonprofit organizations that distribute them to people in need. The Salvation Army is a good example of an organization that collects clothes pretty much everywhere around the U.S. There are also plenty of local nonprofit organizations, especially in larger towns and cities, that will accept clothing donations. Any little bit helps! Above is a picture of some of the cans I collected for last month's monthly challenge! Hopefully I'll recycle them soon and add it to the Recycled Can Funds!
Thanks to my sister, I have 56 more cents for the changepot, 2 more box tops, 9 more tabs, and 10 more recycled can fund cents for the count! Also, hours is updated to 16, cups of water to 3252, and coke rewards points to 30! DIFFICULTY: Hard So I realized today that I need to actually charge my camera before I can take and upload pictures, so I'll do the wrap up for last month tomorrow! But wow, I can't believe it's already April! This month's theme is poverty. Hunger, homelessness, and other problems associated with poverty affect millions of people worldwide. Today's challenge, which is also this month's challenge/project, is much more difficult than past ones, but hopefully I'll be able to make it work! The challenge is to make a garden with vegetables and donate the produce. I'm also hoping to grow some flowers that I can give away! This one is going to take a lot of effort, and I'm not entirely sure how well it's going to work out, but I'm hoping to grow some tomatoes and some lettuce at least! I'll be posting updates throughout the month :) |
