One thing I totally take for granted every day: shoes.
Honestly, I don't really think about my shoes when I put them on. I don't think about how useful they are, how much I really need them, or how difficult life would be if I didn't have them. However, the reality is that millions of people, especially kids, go barefoot every day. This is bad for three reasons:
1. Walking barefoot can cause diseases that permanently damage the feet.
2. Walking barefoot can cause cuts and sores that can become infected.
3. Some schools require children to wear shoes as a part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they can't receive an education.
So you may be wondering...how can we help? Well, Tom's Shoes is a well known group that donates one pair of shoes for every pair someone buys. That adds up to a lot of shoes! However, buying shoes is just half the battle. It's also important, especially if you can't afford to buy another pair of shoes right now, to get the word out. On April 8th, Tom's Shoes is asking everyone to go barefoot for one day, one hour, or even just a few minutes! Go for a walk barefoot, try to do some daily chores barefoot, and if anyone asks you why you aren't wearing any shoes, tell them about how much we take shoes for granted, every day! You can pledge to go barefoot here, and below is a video that explains the cause a little better!
