Today's challenge is more for you than for other people, but it's still important! It is to quit a bad habit. Everyone has a bad habit, whether it's smoking, or biting your nails, or eating a little more junk food than you should! No matter how small a bad habit may seem, sometimes it can be bad for your health. Here's a chance to try to quit! It's a great sense of accomplishment and it'll make YOU feel better in the process! We've got to be kind to ourselves too, right? :)

Today's challenge is to send in a postsecret! Postsecret started as an art project where people would anonymously send in a secret on a post card. It's grown into a huge project, with many books filled with postsecrets and many exhibitions taking place around the world, showcasing these anonymous secrets. Sending in a secret may not only help you get something of your chest, it also helps other people learn from what you experienced or know that they aren't alone in what they're going through or what they believe. There are all kinds of different postsecrets. Some are heartwarming, some are strange, some are sad, some will definitely take you by surprise! They aren't always serious. Some of them are silly, a lot of them will make you laugh. Others are a little on the inappropriate side, but they're all unassuming and honest. There's a collection of some that are posted online every Sunday, you can check them out on this site! Here's an example of a postsecret (this was mailed in on a postcard): DIFFICULTY: Easy
This challenge is not only easy, it also takes very little time to do! I recently learned about something really cool called microvolunteering. What if you could volunteer during your extra time during the day when you don't really have time to start something new, but you're just kind of waiting for something to do? What if you could volunteer while waiting in the dentist's office, or waiting in line, or taking the train to work? Microvolunteering provides you with that opportunity! The Extraordinaries are a group of people who created a database of microvolunteering opportunities. These range from taking a picture with your phone, helping to proof read something, translating something, and many others that are even easier! If you check out the website you can not only find microvolunteering opportunities you can do right now, you can also create your own mission! I believe you can also download an iPhone application from The Extraordinaries. It's a great way to give back using your own skills and talents and no cost to you and in very little time from the convenience of your phone or computer! DIFFICULTY: Easy
Today's challenge is to search to give! This is another really easy way to help out your favorite charities by doing the same things you do everyday! Search engines like GoodSearch gain revenue from ads who pay for every pageview they get. The wonderful thing about goodsearch is that they all willing to give the revenue from your searches to the non-profit of your choice. You get to choose from a list of thousands, see how much money they've already raised, and see how much you've raised for them through your own searches! Imagine if one school switched from google to Goodsearch in just their libraries. They could raise huge amounts of money for a charity! DIFFICULTY: Easy
Today's challenge is to create a Socialvibe account. Socialvibe allows ordinary people help charities every day at no cost to them. You only spend a few minutes every once and awhile, and it helps raise money for you favorite causes! How does it work? Advertisers pay Socialvibe for every view they get. If you make a socialvibe account, you get the code for a widget to put on a site or blog. You can also play activities created by companies that are trying to advertise their products. The companies donate money to Socialvibe in return. How do they choose what charities? Here's where we can have a big impact! Socialvibe gains a large sum of money from advertisers like MTV, Sprint, etc. When you sign up for Socialvibe, you choose what charity you would like to benefit. There are a ton of choices to pick from! Then, you play the activities created by the sponsors and earn points. You also earn points from pageviews from the badge on your site and doing other simple activities like posting in the forum, answering the question of the day, and logging on. The more points you gain for a certain charity, the more they receive from Socialvibe! You and I get to choose which charities receive the largest percentage of the funds, and it's really easy to do! With my Socialvibe account, I chose to benefit Children's Miracle Network, an amazing charity that provides medical care, research, and education to help millions of children regardless of whether or not their parents are able to pay. So far, I've earned 3,790 points. Not too bad! :) DIFFICULTY: Easy Happy super bowl Sunday!! Since most of us do a lot of shopping on super bowl weekend, I thought this would be a good challenge for today! Today's challenge is to donate the free item you would guy from a buy one, get one free deal! Not only are you giving back by donating, you're also donating at no cost to you. Besides, it's so easy to do, and you don't have to take any extra time out of your day to do it! :) On another note, congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for winning their first super bowl!! What a truly inspiring story and what an exciting day for them!! UPDATE: 29 more soda tabs (finally over 200!) and 26 more cents to the count! DIFFICULTY: Easy
I only have a few minutes to post this (busy day!) but today's challenge is to clear your plate! When I was in sixth grade we went on this class trip at this camp where all of the food that we didn't eat was collected and weighed. Sure, it was kind of gross, but by the end of it we learned a lot. So much is wasted that could be avoided by simply clearing our plates! This is something I plan on trying to do for the rest of the year and even longer, not just for today! :) DIFFICULTY: Very Easy!
Today's challenge is to help out a non-profit without donating money. How can you do this? Well, there are a bunch of different ways! However, a really easy thing to do is to advertise one of your favorite non-profits. One of the things that non-profit organizations really need is more support! By putting a link to a non-profit on your website or blog, or by just telling your friends about the cause, you're spreading the word! The charity I want to talk about is the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society not only funds research for cures, but it also educates, advocates, and supports cancer survivors while remembering those who lost their battle. They provide support resources like a phone line for anyone seeking information or help and is the largest private funder of cancer research in the United States. They even created a study called CP-3, which is gathering information from people who have yet to be diagnosed with cancer to try to figure out exactly what causes it. It's a great organization that is definitely worth a look! DIFFICULTY: Easy
Here's another extra challenge! What kind of world do YOU want? Five for Fighting is asking all of us this question, and you can answer it! They describe it in greater detail under the How It Works section, but basically you can tell Five for Fighting what kind of world YOU want just by watching videos! They've pledged to give donation to the charities they've listed on the site based on which videos get the most views. So what's important to you? Autism research? Our soldiers on the front? Watch videos and support the future that you want! DIFFICULTY: Easy
Today's challenge doesn't fit under the category of Saying Thank You, which is our theme for this month. I like to try to switch it around, when I can, and throw in an extra idea or two during months that are less busy! Anyways, today's extra challenge is to email for good! I'm sure that there are a lot of different email services do this, so check to see if yours does! One that I know is live.com/hotmail.com. You can read about it further on the site, but basically Microsoft has pledged to donate a percent of their advertising revenue for every email sent using this site! And, it's not only emails. You can also use their instant messaging system. You can choose to have your emails donated to Susan G. Komen, Unicef, the American Red Cross, the National MS Society, or one of the other options on the site. It's a great way to take something you do everyday without even thinking about it and use it to give back! As for an update for the Count, I'm glad my family has had better lucky finding change on the ground than I have! Another penny for the change pot and two more soda tabs! (Almost 200 tabs!) |
