I absolutely love seeing big companies give back in their communities and here's a great example of one! A lot of us tend to take the little things, like being able to do our laundry, for granted. When natural disasters like hurricanes hit, the people affected have no way to do the little things like doing their laundry. The Tide Loads of Hope program gives back to these communities by providing laundry services to people who have been affected by natural disasters. They bring washing machines to the areas that are hit! It's a pretty cool concept because most of do laundry and a bunch of us already use the Tide brand. If you do use Tide, all you have to do to help is enter the cap code on the bottle that you purchase online here. Entering the code donates a dollar to the cause! If you really don't feel like using the Tide brand but still want to help, or if you want to make a bigger contribution, you can buy a Tide t-shirt here. All of the profits will go towards helping families affected by different natural disasters.
DIFFICULTY: Easy

DIFFICULTY: Easy It's not exactly time for Halloween yet, but you can use even this holiday to give back to our troops! Usually people think about Christmas as the big giving holiday, and it is, but Halloween is kind of like giving too! Extra Halloween candy you might have this year can be sent to Operation Gratitude, an organization that has sent tons of things to our soldiers overseas to make their time away from home more bearable and, of course, to say thank you! Afterall, who doesn't love a good candy bar every once and awhile? DIFFICULTY: Easy If you're looking for a way to help our troops, one of the easiest ways is to send a letter! Everyone loves getting letters, and the troops especially do, I'm sure, because they're so far away from home! The great thing about this organization is that you don't do any of the work. All you have to do is fill out some information and type out what you'd like to be in the letter and they'll send it for you. You can fill out the form here. It's free, but if you're interested in donating, they definitely need money to purchase stamps and such to send these letters! I recently stumbled upon a trailer for a movie based on the essay written by LtCol Strobl, who wrote about his experience in bringing Private First Class Chance Phelps home home from Iraq after he was killed in action. I thought it was amazing how the people in the film reacted with such gratitude and kindness. If you want to read the essay, you can find it here. One of my favorite quotes from the essay, and a tribute to the bravery of Chance Phelps was this: "I noticed that he wore six ribbons over his marksmanship badge; the senior one was his Purple Heart. I had been in the Corps for over 17 years, including combat tour, and was wearing eight ribbons. This Private First Class, with less than a year in the Corps, had already earned six." DIFFICULTY: Easy So since I like the idea of a nice smooth transition back into Love, Anonymously, today's challenge is another easy one! Today's challenge is to feed the birds! This one just takes a second because all you have to do is scatter some seeds on the ground or put up a bird feeder. Not only is it nice to see the different birds, it's also nice for them, especially in the winter after a snow fall when it's really difficult for them to find food. Even in the spring time, when the ground is clear, it's still good for birds to have food for themselves that's easy to find once their eggs hatch! DIFFICULTY: Easy When I think of saving the world, I tend to think of helping people or going green, but animals need just as much help as we do sometimes! Especially the animals that are abused, or house pets that were left on the streets by their owners. There are a lot of ways to help, but one of the simplest ones is to visit this site. It's filled with petitions you can sign against animal cruelty and it educates the public about animal abuse. It also keeps updates on current animal cruelty cases. On a different note, today I was out driving and stopped to get lemonade from a lemonade stand for the first time since getting my license! I'm pretty sure everyone has had a lemonade stand at some point in their life and has noticed that they aren't always very successful, so next time you pass one, why not take a second to make a little kid's day? :) DIFFICULTY: Easy In the course of a lifetime, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer, and despite the belief that skin cancer is a relatively "safe" cancer, and is much easier to cure, approximately 1 person every hour, on average, dies from Melanoma. However, the good news is that with early detection, often made possible by education, 99% of those diagnosed with skin cancer survive. So how can you help? This is a pretty simple one! For every person that Joins the Cause against skin cancer, a donation is made to organizations like The Skin Cancer Foundation that works to educate the public on how to detect and prevent skin cancer. So you may have noticed I haven't posted in a really long time (yikes!). It just so happened that with the multitude of tests I had to take towards the end of my junior year as well as a lot of other things that have been happening, I needed to take a bit of a hiatus from Love, Anonymously. However, I'm back now and hopefully I'll be able to try to catch up, maybe posting a couple of times a day. Even if I wasn't able to maintain the one post a day idea I had at the beginning, I'd still like to complete as many of the 365 good deeds I can in 2010! UPDATES:
Anyways, I haven't been completely ignoring Love, Anonymously while I've been taking a break! First of all, back on Day 80, I talked about an event called Relay for Life that raises money for the American Cancer Society. Well, I successfully captained a team this year and it was a really great experience! My team raised $5,507 and I personally raised $1,215. I walked around 16.5 miles around the track and the event itself was great! The weather was perfect and for anyone thinking about participating in their local Relay for Life (they have them all around the country), I'd definitely recommend it! I've also been working on a couple other things, but I have to get my facts together before I can talk about them! By now you may be wondering what today's challenge actually is. Well, everyone knows how important a healthy meal is, especially in growing children. Most of us also happen to hate getting junk mail in their email inboxes, so Chipotle has come up with a pretty good solution to both problems! They are asking all of us to forward them any junk email we get, and for every 100,000 emails, they are going to donate $10,000 to The Lunch Box! The Lunch Box is a non-proft organization that is helping millions of kids across the country receive healthy meals at lunch time! I thought this was a great idea because it doesn't come at any cost to us, but it helps a lot of kids! Pretty simple, right? Forward your junk here: [email protected] And for more information, check out this link. Difficulty: Easy
In crisis situations, like war torn zones or impoverished areas, children are some of the most vulnerable, along with women. In some places, children are forced to fend for themselves because their parents have passed away. In others, they are kidnapped and become child soldiers. But what about the children living right down the street in America? Here, too, they face troubles because their parents are not always their best advocates. Some children are abused or hungry, and have no way to be heard. By getting our lawmakers to focus on the children who can't speak for themselves, we are keeping the promise of greater future generations alive. We are giving them a better chance at becoming productive members of society. You can take action here. DIFFICULTY: Easy So I haven't been posting for a few weeks due to me having taken a bunch of AP classes and having a million things inside and outside of school to get done before this week! But, now I'm back, and I fully plan on making up the days that I missed posting! On a different note, I'd like to thank my aunt for getting me this really cool book. It's pictured at the left and it's called "How to be an Everyday Philanthropist". It's full of 330 awesome ways to make a difference in day to day life and it's divided really nicely between different themes. It also has little symbols telling you whether or not it's a good family activity or if it'll take less than 15 minutes. I'll definitely be using a lot of these in the near future! Here's the link to Amazon if you're interested. Also, today's challenge is to Save Darfur! There is a multitude of ways to do this one, with most of them surrounding the organization that's actually called "Save Darfur". You can download the toolbar to help raise funds. Join a local group, lobby congress, make a donation, and even participate in an event. The list goes on and on! If you haven't heard about Darfur, it's one of the most brutal humanitarian crises in recent history. What is happening in Darfur is essentially mass genocide, with people being forced to flee their homes and relinquish all of their belongings if they're luck enough to be spared death. Fortunately, there are thousands of people out there who agree that this is wrong. Here's a video if you want to learn more about it!. DIFFICULTY: Easy
Admittedly, my friends are sometimes the people that I take for granted the most. I always assume they're going to be there for me, and I can't imagine what I would do if they weren't! What makes them so special is not only that they're always supportive and there for me, but that they know and care so much about me. I believe that really getting to know someone and truly making the effort and taking the time to do so is one of the greatest gifts you can give someone! I can't remember where, but at some point in my life I came across the idea that "it's nearly impossible to hate someone you really know" or perhaps it was that "it's nearly impossible not to love someone you really know", but either way, I agree. Who knows, you might realize you have a lot more things in common with someone than you originally thought, so make the effort! |
