I leave for Guatemala tomorrow! I've mentioned a couple of times that I'm going to be spending a week doing service there, but what am I doing exactly?
Timmy Global Health is an organization that provides direct medical assistance to parts of the world with limited access to doctors. They also strive to bring awareness to global health issues, and they think that it's important that volunteers experience these issues first hand. Instead of simply donating money and forgetting about the people of Guatemala, I will have the opportunity to make memories that I will never forget!
Tomorrow, we'll be flying to Guatemala City with suitcases filled with medical supplies as well as a couple of doctors and nurses who will be volunteering with us. One of the biggest problems facing the people of Guatemala is malnutrition. Did you know that the chronic malnutrition rate for children under 5 in Guatemala is 49.8%? That is the fourth highest in the world. A lot of the medicine we will be giving out will be vitamins. I am so excited to be able to have this experience, and I feel incredibly blessed!
Today's challenge is to volunteer outside of the country. I labeled it as hard because it can be logistically difficult to plan and it can also be expensive, but having the ability to directly help other people (instead of just sending money) is priceless!
Just in case you were wondering, I will not have internet access while I am in Guatemala. Unfortunately, this means that I won't be able to update this blog or twitter for the next week. When I come back, I plan on doing a long entry about my experience in Guatemala. I can't wait to share!
